Since the beginning, I've always heard the other percussion instruments in my head while playing the drumset.  Set drummers are some of the few musicians who usually don't touch their instrument while playing.  We have sticks and pedals in between us and our instruments.  I enjoy putting down the sticks and really feeling the drum vibrate while playing them.
